The Dust

The dust exists everywhere and it can form any shape.

In the site, as some cranes were working to construct or deconstruct the buildings, there was a great deal of dust floating in the air. So I planned to use the dust as my starting point. The main question for me is what can the dust does, what’s its trace across the site and where is its ending.

So I imagined the path of one dust. It was awoke by the shake of cranes, came across the steelwork, went through the pipes, was flapped by the flags and irradiated by the traffic lights, felt the shake of tube, filtered through the fence, landed on the canopy, was swept by the sweeper, finally, it landed on the site with the natural shape. If there were numerous dusts involved in this process, the last appearance would be similar to the sand dune. This is the original model of my architecture. Whilst the inner space was also shaped by the dusts.

Exhibition at V&A: English Architecture 1660-1715

V&A is the most comprehensive design museum that I have seen before. It really deserved to spend some
time to see the exhibitions there every week. The most impressive one was Europe and the English Baroque, which I saw last weekend. Those delicate models and drawings could reveal the highly prosperity of architecture during that period. The picture was a design for the Temple of Concord, a typical building in London.

Some ideas about sites

On Thursday, after looking around in two sites, I found some interesting things indeed. First, the steel structure came to my mind, I plan to build a space using every kind of steel materials around the site. Such as the girder, windows structure, scaffold, Helmet, billboard, hook of crane, steel wire mesh, chimney, barrier, destination board, steel stairs......Some of them were built underground, some were built overground and others went through the vertical space......

second, when I stood at the cross of oxford street, the shake around the sites, suddenly caught my attentions. As every movement could induce the corresponding shake, the floating dust, people's voice, plane in the sky, exhaust gas, swivel sweeper, subway train, birds, smell of restaurant, wind, the flag, change of light including sunshine, traffic lights and advertising lights...... I'd like to conclude all kinds of shake separately and then combine them together to see what will happen......maybe I can translate the shake to the powder( in micro-level ) or wave( in macro-level )......of course, the underground shake was different from the overground shake......
Just two simple ideas, but I think, after the tutorial in the next week, the key point will be clearer and the confusions could be worked out.

The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus

After I saw the film yesterday, the only word I can say was, WOW!
Actually, I have seen several Terry Gilliam's films, and this one was very Terry, too.
It was full of  puppet theatres and magic tricks,  beautiful ladies and very short men, fabulous myth and opposite reality. And just like his other works, there were still some puzzles and fuzzy plot confused me.
Yes, I think I can use these confused methods to the design.

F1 cars and BEIJING opera actress

Actually, I have another idea about the motel design, but unfortunately there was not enough time to develop, so I left it as a half-finished work.
The main conception also come from an amazing flower in the quarry, the Saussurea, I'd like to consider it as the original model of motel building. Then the BEIJING opera actress' decoration caught my attention because it was so similar to the flower. On the other side, from the motel, certainly I associated the F1 cars, interestingly, I found some similarity between the F1 cars and actress' decoration. You can see, their elements, clothes, suspensions, flags, the procedure of painting and even the movement, seemed to resemble each other closely. In my opinion, this was an unusual starting point to the design, so I planned to build the motel in the structure and appearance of Saussurea, but using the components of F1 cars and BEIJING opera decoration.
It was not very important whether I can finish it, the key point was the procedure of thinking and exploring through the different methods, I suppose. So just enjoy the process and motivate the potentials.

Invisible power

In the quarry,
There were people and machines working for the evolution of stones, in terms of removal, weathering and vanish of the rock materials.
In the procedure of passage of time, apart from human’s activities, the rock was split by the force of natural invisible power such as wind and water. This process was just like flowers dispersing. Their petals unfolded, swung, wither and floated down. Consequently, several special inner rooms were formed in different sizes and times. What we want to do is use the inner space appropriately to build a motel with natural environment.
The wind went through the cracks, brought fresh air to rooms, then produced the virtuous circle for inside environment.
